Oakland is home to one of the busiest container ports in northern California, making the city an important trade center and transportation hub with a vibrant and active waterfront. Founded in 1852, Oakland has a deep history going back to the Huchiun tribe—the earliest known inhabitants who lived here for thousands of years. It is one of the most ethnically integrated cities in the United States, with a thriving visual and performing arts scene.
